Where notation ends,
meaning begins
Rafael Palacios
Conductor & Curator
I see the score as much more than notation— it’s an eloquent text— a conversation, a poem, an argument waiting to be voiced. My work unlocks hidden ideas and emotions for the orchestra, transforming rehearsal into discovery and performance into revelation.

I am a guest conductor who creates powerful programs that engage musicians and audiences alike.
Drawing on a distinguished performing career with the world’s leading ensembles and inspired by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, I founded the Laboratory on Rhetorical Performance Practice. Through it, and my Sturm und Drang Laboratory, I guide orchestras from Europe, Latin America, and China in a journey of rhetorical insight—turning masterworks by J. S. Bach and sons, Mozart, Haydn, and the Mannheim School into shared, revelatory experiences.
This is where scholarship meets passion, and where every performance becomes an act of compelling oration.

With a scholar’s insight and a conductor’s fire, I specialize in giving voice to the emotional power of the Sturm und Drang repertoire, conducting it with clarity, precision, and emotion.
I curate programs that uncover frequently forgotten works and connect with listeners on a profound emotional level

"A serious, deeply musical, and sensitive artist with a PhD from the Sorbonne, he would be a tremendous asset to any orchestra."
