I believe the conductor, above all is a storyteller and a rhetorician. My artistic direction is driven by a single conviction: that every score is an eloquent text—a layered argument, a poetic conversation, a dramatic scene waiting to be voiced. My work is to unlock this rhetoric, transforming rehearsal into discovery and performance into revelation.

Dr. Rafael Palacios’s approach is therefore defined by a profound synthesis of scholarly rigor and performative passion. His programs are not merely concerts, but compelling narratives that explore pivotal moments in music history. He specializes in curating journeys—such as from the Galant to the Grotesque and into the heart of Sturm und Drang—that illuminate the philosophical tensions of an era.

This vision materializes through specific, interconnected practices:

  • Thematically-Driven Programming:
Creating concert narratives that trace aesthetic revolutions, giving audiences an intellectual and emotional arc.
  • The Laboratory Model:
Founding long-term initiatives like the Sturm und Drang Laboratory with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa, turning an orchestra into a center for specialized research and performance.
  • Rhetorical Performance Practice:
Applying his Sorbonne-trained analysis to rehearsal, enabling musicians to uncover the "hidden ideas and emotions" within the notation, fostering deep engagement with the material.

The result is transformative: for the orchestra, a process of genuine discovery; for the institution, a profile of unique scholarly-artistic leadership; and for the audience, a powerful, revelatory cultural experience.

My work brings together conducting and curatorship: I do not present works in isolation, but construct concerts as coherent dramaturgical arcs—spaces of contrast, volatility, and release. Whether leading an ensemble or shaping a concert program, my focus is on achieving eloquence and clarity in performance.
